The wood in this case is more there to be a frame than to show off.

Metal

Another of the 2010 furniture trends is for metal to be a part of your furniture. Wood and metal generally get along very well so you should not have a problem incorporating iron, brass, copper or any of the other metals into a design that will not only be a useful piece of furniture but add a little shine to the room.

Experimental Shapes

Finally, if you have a good creative side, you may want to consider unique and experimental shapes in the pieces. Since it is easy enough to draw and cut wood furniture into any shape, there are all kinds of unique wood tables, chairs and other pieces out there on the market. Take a look around the room you are going to decorate and choose one that will fit in with the room and maybe even give it a little more personality.

Let's start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When you read you begin with A-B-C
When you sing you begin with do-re-mi

That's all find well and good to begin reading and singing, but how in the world does one start a novel? Or better yet, where does one start? And when does one start? I wish I could give you a cut and dried answer to those questions but I cannot. No one can. However, I can do the next best things, and offer a few suggestions that may help.

Every author who has ever written a page of prose knows that feeling of looking at the blank sheet of paper - or the blank computer screen and struggles with, "Where do I begin my story?" A common dilemma to be sure.

What Needs to Be Accomplished?

Let's look at novel openings and determine what needs to be accomplished. Once you know what you want to accomplish, you begin to move in that direction. To simply begin writing Chapter 1, with no thought of what needs to be presented, is to weaken your chances of ever writing a strong, editor-pleasing, reader-pleasing novel. (Read that - one that will sell!)

Before the first line is written, hopefully, you have already decided, among other things:

- Your main character
- Secondary characters
- Setting
- Point of View
- Verb Tense: past or present tense
- First Person or Second Person
- Character-Driving or Plot-Driven
- Tone

Avoid Rabbit Trails

The opening is where you set up your reader for what is to come, not only with regard to the plot, but with the structure and tone of the story. Whatever techniques you plan to use throughout, you will be introducing those to the reader to prepare him to accept them in a longer, more complicated form.

Decades ago, a novelist could open the story with a lengthy narrative, descriptions, and winding rabbit trails of plot diversions. That will never work in today's world. The author must immediately grab the attention of the editor and (hopefully) future readers.

A good piece of advice to remember is:

Begin with the day that made a difference.

Keeping this in mind will help to prevent those meandering rabbit trails at the outset.

Avoid Static Scenes

Avoid a static scene in the opening of the novel. Let there be action. If the character is thinking, then nothing is happening.

John leaned back in his office chair planning once again how he was going to ask Mr. Withers for the raise. He promised Hazel that today for sure he would ask. But how? What would he say? And how would he word his request?

This is an example of a scene going nowhere and doing nothing.

John shoved his office chair back from the desk and jumped to his feet. The chair slammed against the credenza behind him. Shoving his hands deep into his pockets, he strode to the window and looked down at the street below. This was it. Now or never! He would ask Mr. Withers for a raise even if it meant losing his job. If he didn't, he could lose Hazel.

Admittedly, we don't have a very compelling plot going here, but at least you can see that in the second example there is action. You want the characters to be moving and doing, not just being.

Avoid Flashbacks in the Opening

Avoid using a flashback immediately after opening. Flashbacks are difficult enough to guide the reader through without throwing one out too early in the game. Give the novel a chance to be solidly launched in the present before whipping back into the past. You cannot create a forward thrust (and carry the reader forward) by going backward. Remember: before the past can contribute to the story, the present must first exist!

Avoid Introducing Too Many Characters

Avoid introducing too many characters in the opening. This is a sure way to lose your reader. Reader feels he needs a notebook and pen to keep track of everyone. Such crowding has the effect of clutter. It weakens the intensity and creates a sense of disorder. Everything stalls as the reader attempts to sort out the material.

Use the opening to name and define a few of the major characters. (Only one if you are using a single viewpoint.) Once they are clearly defined as individuals with distinct personalities, then begin pacing the introduction of the other characters.

Avoid Dream Scenes

Avoid opening with a dream scene. This can create a very awkward opening. Dreams in general are often seen in the work of beginning writers because it provides an easy out. Therefore, dreams should be used with great care no matter where they occur in a story, but should never be used as an opening. This is a great way to retard the opening scene. Always attempt to open with the immediate sense of the novel. A dream sequence will only cause delay.

An Exercise to Try

Try this exercise to broaden your scope of grasping good novel openings. Go to your favorite book store, or the library, and begin randomly reading opening lines of novels. Use the genre that interests you, whether YAs, mysteries, romances, Sci Fi, Westerns, or mainstream fiction. What grabs you and why? Does it make you want to keep reading, and why? Let this be a learning experience. Take good notes!

Just Do It!

The most important thing is to START! Don't put it off. There will never be a perfect opening chapter. Once you get to chapter 6 or 7, you'll know so much more about the story tone, plot direction and character development, that that first chapter will need to be revised anyway.

Hopefully, these few pointers can at least minimize some of the mistakes that beginning writers often make. Now go get busy and write!

When you think of someone who owns a bookcase, or wants to pick one up for their home, you may think that this person could be the biggest nerd on the planet. Seriously, who else other than a bookworm would need one? Actually, a bookcase can be for everyone. They are multi-purpose, decorative pieces that can enhance the ambiance of any home or office. And just in case you don't look smart already (despite your 4.0 GPA), having one really helps.

Although most bookcases seem pretty standard, there are different types and styles, each with their own unique options and features. A standard bookcase may seem be a rectangular shelf and not much more to it. However, many are equipped with adjustable shelves in case you need more room for your books or whatnots at the bottom shelves, or wherever it is that tickles your fancy.

As oppose to the office, the home may benefit from a wooden bookcase, rather than one made of metal. Having one made of wood provides a vintage, romantic atmosphere in the home. Many furniture manufacturers will also design them with intricate accents for added brilliance. You may also find some with doors, and drawers for protection against the elements and added storage. However, if you need a bookcase for the office, a metal one would be an ideal choice due to its versatility.

If saving space is an issue, consider a corner bookcase. These are made specifically to fit into corners allowing you to use the floor space for other pieces of furniture such as desks, filing cabinets, credenzas, etc.

So there you have it. Bookcases aren't just for nerds anymore. If you're an athlete, use them to display your trophies. By all means, display photos of your loved ones in your bookcase. Has your home office lost its appeal and function? Has it become the "catch-all" room for everything in your home? Can you even see the top of your desk or any part of the floor?

Working out of your home is quite common these days. So it is very important to have a space that not only meets your needs but is inviting to yourself. It is YOUR space and it should be inspiring, beautiful and comfortable. If you are like most working men and women with home-based businesses, you probably spend a lot of time in your office and probably more then you would like. So why not make it an attractive AND functional place to work.

Sometimes home offices become the dumping ground for everything for which you don't have a place. You want to make the best use of every possible inch of your office and that includes the closet. If you have clothing and items that do not pertain to your business, move them out, remove the wire hanging shelves and add bookshelves or bookcases for extra storage. Unattractive filing cabinets can also be hidden in your closet making the most of your space.

As with every room, your home office should have the three basic elements of design which are Harmony/Mood, Balance, and Function. This is your space, make it inviting for yourself by adding your personal touch. Following are tips to help you create an inspirational space that reflects your personality.

To create harmony and set the mood:

o Hang your favorite artwork
o Add your favorite photos
o Add greenery to warm it up
o Keep your brain stimulated, paint it a cheerful color
o Create a cozy reading corner by adding a comfortable chair with a table and lamp for either clients, friends or yourself

Offices do not have to be unattractive because of the necessary equipment such as computers, copiers and fax machines. Minimize the appearance of all these machines so they are not the first thing you see when entering the room. Following are some tips to help balance your office and make it more functional:

o Reposition your desk by moving it out from the wall to give yourself a nice view i.e. a window, facing toward the door.
o Place your fax/copy machine behind the desk so it is not the first thing you see when entering
o Use greenery and silk plants to help hide unsightly cables and cords
o If you have room, put your credenza or a long table behind the desk to help balance out the room and provide a place for equipment
o For more storage, place a bookshelf on top of another desk or table

The objective is to create your home office so that YOU are happy and comfortable with it. Not only will you will find that re-creating your office helps you become more productive, but you will enjoy spending time in your 'new' space.
