These furnishings are often confused with sideboards since both serve almost similar purposes. Moreover, in common furniture terms, they are sometimes referred to as types of sideboards used in similar places and occasions. While they both can be interpreted within a single term, i.e. as one, there is a thin line of difference when they refer to credenza desks. These are mostly used for corporate offices or at times home offices, since they provide good working space and can hold office equipment like computers, printers etc.
When used as sideboards in a residential setting, credenzas can supplement dining table space where different food dishes and drinks can be kept. They have also been found to be very effective furniture when a party or buffet is hosted at home. Alternatively, they can also be used in the role of an accent table or console table where decorative items, collectibles, antique pieces, lamps, vases or flowers can be displayed.
In a credenza desk configuration however, they are solely used for reading and writing purposes with associated office equipment like computer, facsimile, printers, scanners, typewriters etc. Equipped with drawers and shelves, they can be ideal storage place for different types of items.
Design issues
Credenzas have a wide variety of designs. Their shapes and sizes vary too, with the intended purpose. Usually they differ from the point of the materials used like wood, metal, fiberglass, stones etc. Mostly wooden, they are also made with combination of glass and/or metal (wrought iron or steel). These are normally lower and narrower than other tables. Their tops can add to a more antique and elegant look when they are made of stones like granite or marble. Highly polished surfaces with occasional hand-tooled outlines generate a completely different appeal in your home decor. Others of all types and designs usually have drawers and shelves in common. The overall design and style depends much on the designs of these shelves, cabinets and drawers. In a sideboard role, they can be round or oval shaped although most of the people prefer rectangular shapes. In a desk role though, rectangular versions are always preferred.
Credenzas serve or complement varying use of furniture at your home. Depending on the intended use, they can be placed almost anywhere of the house. They are therefore very useful.
